Medicine Unit (MFM)
What do we offer?
We are a team of
specialist obstetricians and dedicated midwives with extensive experience in
dealing with complicated pregnancies. All members work together closely to optimise mother and baby outcomes. The Unit manages all
aspects of complicated pregnancies, in conjunction where necessary with
ultrasound specialists, neonatologists and the
consultant services of the general hospital. We also provide follow-up for
mothers and babies
The Unit has a busy research program with emphasis on improving care for mothers and babies in the future.

What services do we provide?
Where to find us
Come to Monash Medical Centre at 246 Clayton Road, Clayton. The unit is on the 5th floor of the
hospital. Enter through the main entrance, turn left and head towards the ‘A’
lifts. Take a lift to Level 5 and as you get out turn right. You will see a board
with ‘Fetal Monitoring’ listed. Turn left into that corridor and follow the
signs.

Do I need a referral?
Yes, your GP,
obstetrician or another specialist can refer you. But you can ring us for
advice during our service hours.

No, there is no
charge.

As a patient in our
care you will be given a brochure about the Unit. As well, the hospital
provides a folder of information, which covers the hospital, pregnancy and
birth care, breastfeeding, recovery after birth and the care of a new baby.

What do we offer?
The Unit has highly
trained gynaecologists who provide skilled advice and
management in the areas of contraception, sterilization and pregnancy
termination. We have both male and female doctors and a psychologist is member
of the team.

Do I need a referral?
Some women are
referred to the service by their GP or by a doctor they see at the hospital.
However, you can come to the Clinic without a referral from a doctor.
Will I have to pay?
There is a charge for contraceptives, otherwise
there is no charge for our services.

Written information
We have leaflets
about the methods of contraception we provide. This includes information about
female laparoscopic sterilization and vasectomy. We can also give you written
information about termination of pregnancy.

an active consumer reference group.

Do I need a referral?
You can make an
appointment with the breast screening service without referral from a doctor.
For all our other services a referral from a GP or medical specialist is necessary.
Do I have to pay?
If you attend Monash Breast Clinic for diagnostic testing there may be
some cost depending on circumstances.

We also refer patients to and collaborate with Peter MacCallum Radiation Oncology.

What do we offer?
Ward 1 serves four
units – the Gynaecology Oncology Unit, the Gynaecology Unit, Breast Services
and General Surgery. We have a very friendly and supportive multidisciplinary
team of caregivers. All staff members are encouraged to maintain high skill and
knowledge levels by engaging in further education opportunities.
The team includes nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, a dietician and a social worker
Women are given as much information about their condition as they need or want and they are involved in decisions about their treatment
After discharge from hospital we can arrange for women to have support and care from the Royal District Nursing Service and/or from our Post Acute Care service.

What do we offer?
The unit provides
integrated care for patients with gynaecolgical
oncology malignancies. We work in close liaison with our radiation oncology and
medical oncology colleagues to provide state of the art treatment. This is
together with our ongoing involvement in both clinical trials and basic
research.
