At Southern Health the Women’s & Children's Program provides comprehensive services in maternity and gynaecology as well as for women with breast disorders. The services are based at Monash Medical Centre, Clayton, Casey Hospital, Dandenong Hospital and Greater Dandenong Community Health Service (Springvale).

The teaching of undergraduates in medicine, nursing, midwifery and allied health and postgraduate nursing and medical students takes place within the Program.

There are strong research affiliations with Monash University Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the Institute for Reproduction and Development, Prince Henry’s Institute of Medical Research and Deakin University School of Nursing.

Southern Health offers women the widest range of birth care choices in Victoria. The choices include GP and shared care arrangements and specialist obstetric services for women with high risk pregnancies. Women who have a low risk of complications may choose pregnancy and birth care with midwives at any Southern Health Hospital

The Extended Postnatal Care Program (EPC) offers all women who give birth in a Southern Health maternity unit a home visit from a midwife after discharge.

A full range of gynaecology and gynaecological oncology (cancer) services are available. Women who need these services may attend the Emergency Department and the outpatient consultation clinic or come as inpatients for either day procedures or for longer admissions.

Women with breast disorders including breast cancer can access our breast services, which include screening, diagnostic investigations, and a range of medical and surgical treatments. Close links with the Oncology (cancer) Unit and Peter MacCallum hospital ensure that women with breast cancer receive integrated care and treatment.

Who will look after you?
The people you see most of during your pregnancy, birth and after birth care are doctors and midwives.

Obstetric risk
When you book in for pregnancy care you are assessed for your risk of having complications during pregnancy or birth. If you look at the models of care table you will notice that some options cater only for women in a particular risk category, which may be low, moderate or high. The definitions below are a guide, but if you’re uncertain about your own status you may like to speak to your doctor or a midwife.

Low risk – you have no serious health problems or addictions to chemical substances and no history of past serious pregnancy or birth problems.
Your care may be with GP's or Midwives at any site: Clayton, Casey or Dandenong

Moderate risk – you are neither ‘high’ nor ‘low risk’.
Your care may be with specialist obstetricians at Dandenong Hospital.

High risk – you have a chronic health problem, a chemical substance addiction or a history of serious problems with a previous pregnancy.
You will require tertiary level care at Clayton.
