The Program has developed pre-admission clinics, again coordinated with General Practitioner input, where patients are assessed by the junior medical staff (interns and registrars) and also by an Anaesthetist one week before their admission to hospital. This allows the majority of elective patients to be admitted on the day of surgery, increasing efficiency. Pre-admission clinics also provide valuable patient information, patient education, access to allied health personnel and opportunity for discharge planning.

The Program has developed strategies for the efficient mix of emergency and elective surgical cases by providing all day and day-stay operating access at all four Sites

The Future

The Surgery Program is a leader in the development of advanced laparoscopic surgical techniques in Victoria and there are plans to further development this area of key hole surgery in the future. Advances in endoscopic ultrasound and liver surgery are also planned.
