Nursing Education at Southern Health

Nursing Education at Southern Health is seen as an ongoing process, directed towards reinforcing, changing or developing the functional, professional and personal attitudes and behaviours of Registered Nurses.

Nursing Education provides a range of educational activities designed to meet the demands and needs of nurses employed in Southern Health.  These educational activities are focused on keeping our nurses abreast of the dynamic changes in the clinical areas of the organisation and promoting evidence-based practice and competencies of nurses.

Our educational activities are also delivered in a number of flexible ways, to suit different learning needs.

Southern Health Nursing Executive and Nursing Education are committed to providing education programs that demonstrate strong linkage between the programs offered and the overall direction of nursing.

Nursing Education is committed to researching, designing and offering innovative programs address the needs of nurses employed in Southern Health that:

  • Allow staff to refresh current knowledge and skills or gain new knowledge and skills
  • Allow staff to become competent, with up to date evidence based knowledge and skills
  • Encourage staff retention and attract nursing staff in terms of recruitment

Supporting the Registered Nurse, Division 1 (RN)
The RN is a valued and integral member of both the nursing and multi-disciplinary team within Southern Health.   The RN has a very pivotal clinical, educational, management and social role in the provision of patient care across all services in Southern Health.  Nursing Executive and Nursing Education are committed to providing clinical support, educational and professional opportunities to all Southern Health registered nurses.

Supporting the Registered Nurse, Division 2
The Division 2 Nurse is also a valued and integral member of both the nursing and multi-disciplinary team within Southern Health.   Southern Health is experiencing a significant rise in profile surrounding the role of Division 2 Nurses.  This is evidenced by the current review of the educational curriculum and qualification framework at a federal and state level. Additionally, the role of Division 2 Nurses with added endorsements in medication administration and acute care medical and surgical nursing is attracting great interest and enthusiasm amongst the Southern Health nursing population.  Further acute care areas are currently looking at how Division 2 Nurses may be integrated into their workforce.
