Specialty Program - Neurology
The Program covers adults and children and includes inpatient, investigative and outpatient services with specialist stroke services as a major component. Diseases of the brain and nervous system remain among the most common causes of serious illness and disability in our community, leading to great individual and community cost. Twenty per cent of admissions to hospital have significant neurological disease. In 2000, the Program cared for some 900 neurological inpatients, 400 stroke inpatients, and 1,000 neurosurgical inpatients. It also provided outpatient care to 2000 neurosurgery patients, as well as 18,000 outpatients seen through Monash Neurology (privatised outpatients clinic). A number of specialty clinics have also been established, which enable the patient, carer, clinical specialists (including GP), and allied health staff to meet collectively to deal with the patient’s care.
