The Medical Oncology Unit, at Moorabbin is Southern Health’s Integrated Cancer Centre. Medical Oncology is co-located with the major surgical oncology units including Breast Oncology, Gynae-oncology, Urology, Head and Neck and Colorectal surgery.

A two Linear Accelerator radiotherapy unit (staffed and run by Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute, to be expanded to three machines in 2005) is also located on site. The Integrated Cancer Centre incorporates a comprehensive radiology department, including PET scanning and interventional services in addition to laboratory services. The Centre is supported by the Palliative care team based at McCulloch House, Clayton.

The Medical Oncology Unit has a 16 bed inpatient unit, a 14 chair, three bed chemotherapy day unit and conducts multi-modality outpatient clinics in all the major oncology disciplines.

The unit runs an active research program which is administered by the Monash Oncology Research Institute and is supported by four full-time research staff. Research interests include national and international phase II and III clinical trials, particularly in breast, colorectal, lung and gynaecological cancers and supportive care, as well as trials and research projects initiated and conducted by our own staff.

Existing research collaborations include the Peter McCallum Cancer Institute, The Centre for Women’s Health Research, Dept of Obstetrics & Gynaecology (Monash University), the Dept of Physics & Materials Science (Synchrotron studies) (Monash University), the Dept of Medical Imaging & Radiation Sciences (Monash University), MIA Group Radiology, and several industry partners.
