Our Service
A small number of families have an increased risk of breast cancer, ovarian
cancer, bowel cancer, melanoma and other cancers because they carry a changed,
or altered, cancer predisposing gene. An individual may be more at risk if
several relatives have the same type of cancer, or if a relative has been found
to carry an altered cancer predisposing gene
The Southern Health Familial Cancer Centre works specifically with individuals
with a strong family history of cancer. The Centre provides genetic counselling,
medical advice and psychological support to individuals and their families who
are concerned about their family’s history of cancer. At an appointment we
review a family history, estimate an individual’s risk to develop cancer and
discuss appropriate surveillance and options for early diagnosis and prevention.
Genetic testing is possible in some families and this is also explored.
The Southern Health Familial Cancer Clinic holds multi disciplinary clinics that
incorporate specialists from Genetics, Medical Oncology, Gastroenterology and
surgical disciplines. All individuals who attend the clinic and their referring
doctor will receive detailed letters about the consultation.
Confidentiality of information covered during the appointment is assured and all
services incur no charge to the patient.
