About the Clinics

Do I need a referral?
Doctors can write a referral letter or complete the Referral Form. If relevant, please attach copies of pathology reports.
Individuals can telephone us directly to discuss their needs. Contact details.

Before the appointment
Prior to an appointment, a Family History Questionnaire will be sent out. Documenting the family health history of family members over several generations is important in determining if a condition runs in the family.
Generally an appointment will not be made until the questionnaire has been received by us. As a result it may be a number of weeks between the referral and appointment dates.

Who will I see?
The clinics are run by medical geneticists, genetic counsellors and other medical specialists. Contact details.

What will happen?
During an appointment we will:

Review the family history
Estimate an individual’s risk to develop cancer
Discuss appropriate surveillance and options for early diagnosis and prevention

Genetic testing is possible in some families and this can be explored. Genetic testing is only offered with counselling so that the potential benefits and limitations can be discussed.

The first appointment will take approximately one hour. One or more appointments may be needed.

After the appointment
Individuals who attend the clinic, and the referring doctor, will receive detailed letters about the consultation. This will include recommendations for follow up care. Individuals are able to contact clinic staff after their appointment to discuss any further questions that may arise.

Are there any costs involved?
All services, including appointments and genetic testing, incur no charge to the patient.
