Southern Health’s three
Emergency Departments treat over 128,000 patients each year with the
busiest, the Monash Medical
Centre located in suburban Clayton,
catering for over 55,000 of those attendances.
The Monash Medical Centre opened in 1987, amalgamating a number of
predecessor hospitals, including The Queens Victoria Hospital and Prince
Henry’s. The Emergency Department has just completed a $10 million
re-development.
The Casey Hospital
in Berwick opened its doors in 2004 to serve a rapidly growing
population in the South East and by 2006 35,000 patients were being
treated in its Emergency Department.
The third hospital in the Southern Health family,
Dandenong Hospital,
commenced operations in the 1940s as a small community hospital but
today delivers emergency services to 43,000 local residents annually.
There are 40 registrar positions across the three Emergency Departments
providing considerable opportunity and choice. All Emergency Departments
use patient streaming models which allow for efficient service delivery.
24 hour stays in Emergency are no longer a feature of emergency medicine
at Southern Health’s hospitals.
Staff and patients come from a wide variety of backgrounds, providing a
multi-cultural diversity that ensures a vibrant and interesting work
environment. The breadth of clinical experiences which are provided are
second to none as Southern Health is the largest health care service
provider in Victoria.
Southern Health encourages emergency staff to maintain lifestyle while
saving lives and many staff social and support programs are available
alongside considerable variety in employment options to ensure this can
occur.
RESEARCH
Southern Health is closely allied with nearby Monash University and
Deakin University as well as enjoying links with the University of
Melbourne which ensures a keen research culture is in place. A new
position of Professor of Emergency Medicine has recently been filled
further enhancing the research profile of Southern Health and providing
additional opportunities for career development.
TRAINING
Southern Health has a Fellow of the Australian College of Emergency
Medicine (FACEM) training program that is one of the most successful in
Australasia. The program delivers one on one teaching with College
examiners on staff, supportive FACEM colleagues and financial support is
also available for those who require it.
Examination success rates currently sit at 85 percent for initial
sitting and Southern Health has trained more FACEMS than any other
hospital network in Australia.
First part candidates are well catered for with a well established and
successful primary program, and all training registrars receive
protected non-clinical time.
Southern Health’s emergency departments provide first class support to
help you achieve your Fellowship status.
