An organisational improvement program in the ED has resulted in allocating patients into likely admission and discharge streams, team-based care, hourly monitoring of patient flow and implementation of escalation plans, making Monash ED one of Victoria’ s most efficient facilities and a great place to work.

Facts and figures for 2005:

  • Ambulance bypass dropped by 37 percent

Southern Health’s three Emergency Departments treat over 128,000 patients each year with the busiest, the Monash Medical Centre ED catering for over 50,000 of those attendances. The Emergency Department at Monash has delivered a high standard of patient care over the years under the leadership of Dr Pam Rosengarten and Dr Craig Castle, both long serving staff members,

The Monash Medical Centre opened in 1987, amalgamating a number of predecessor hospitals, including The Queens Victoria Hospital and Prince Henry’s.

In 2005 a $10 million redevelopment of the Emergency Department commenced which will be completed in December 2006. This major redevelopment has enabled the Emergency Department to provide more accessible, responsive, effective and safe care for its catchments.

Maintaining services while in the full throes of a redevelopment highlights the professionalism and dedication of the Emergency Department staff who are committed to working collaboratively to improve the capacity of the Department while improving patient comfort.

The re-development means Monash ED now has separate waiting areas for adults and children, a Paediatric Short Stay Unit, state of the art decontamination and improved isolation facilities, separate Fast Track areas and a new ambulance drop off area.
