Southern Health: Help Us Continue to Care
Message from Southern Health’s Chief Executive
All members of the community have a stake in ensuring the best health care is
available when they may need it, and the best services is a partnership where we
all contribute together.
Fundraising and donations enable Southern Health to buy the additional
equipment, improve facilities and environments and conduct research to further
benefit those who rely on us when they need our help.
The extra support we can receive helps us ensure that the best possible care we
can provide will be there when you need it. Our ability to consistently offer
our unique comprehensive services and facilities is enhanced by the generosity
of patients (past and present), individual donors, community groups and
corporate supporters.
Souther Health’s Fundraising Department, based at Monash Medical Centre Clayton,
is there to help you contribute to your health service, including general
donations, and donations relating to equipment, corporate support, events and
bequests. Donations of $2 or more to Southern Health are fully tax deductible.

Types of Bequests
Your solicitor or trustee company can give you more information, but in general
there are three major types of bequests.
Specific Bequests are gifts of particular articles of property, such as houses
or land, shares, cars, furniture, jewellery, books, etc. given to a particular
person or organisation.
General Bequests are usually sums of money or percentages of the value of your
estate given to persons or organisations.
Residual Bequests are what is remaining of your estate after the specific and
general bequests have been distributed. For example, you may leave residual
bequests to your family, friends, or an organisation such as a registered
charity. In your Will you can nominate how this is to be divided.
Leaving a Bequest to a Southern Health Service / facility.
When preparing your Will, your immediate family should always be the first ones
you consider when dividing up your estate.
However, you may also like to consider a bequest to one of Southern Health’s
facilities, enabling us to improve and expand upon the health services we
provide to the millions of patients that rely on us each year.
For some people, giving through their estate is the only time they will be able
to give a significant gift to an organisation which has helped them throughout
their lives.
The following is some suggested wording, should you wish to support one of our
health care facilities.
If you wish to leave a share of your estate or your entire estate
“I ……………………. bequeath to insert name of service (eg. Monash Medical Centre), a
member of Southern Health in the State of Victoria insert the share you wish to
leave, eg.. “25 per cent of my estate” or “whole of my estate”, free of all duties for
which the written acknowledgment of the Chief Executive Officer shall be
sufficient discharge.
If Southern Health ceases to exist, this legacy shall not fail but my executors
shall pay it to the charitable
organisation which they consider most nearly fulfils the object I intend to
benefit.
If you wish to leave a specific sum of money
Insert “the sum of “ (being the amount you wish to leave.)
If you wish to leave a specific bequest
Insert the address of the property, details of shares, life insurance policies,
bank accounts or other assets
If you wish to leave a remaining (residual) amount.
After specific bequests are written, insert “the residue of my estate” or the
percentage ie. “50% of the residue of my estate”
If you wish to leave an alternative gift
Sometimes a nominated beneficiary may predecease the person for whom the will is
written, or be unwilling to accept the specific bequest. In this instance, it is
possible to redirect the bequest to another beneficiary. To make an alternative
gift simply precede the above general wording with the following clause:
“Should any or one of my beneficiaries predecease me or be unable or unwilling
to accept my bequest, I give that portion to insert name of Southern Health
service (eg. Dandenong Hospital)
If you wish to leave a bequest for a specific purpose (eg. patient care and
treatment, research, education)
Insert the words “ to be used for the purposes of” state the purpose,
location/unit or service to benefit
ie: “to be used for the purposes of acquiring medical equipment for the
treatment and care of patients of the Monash Medical Centre’s Intensive Care
Unit”. |

CORPORATE SUPPORT
Southern Health, as the largest public health service in Victoria, welcomes the
support of the business community.
Companies ranging from some of Australia’s largest corporations to a number of
smaller local businesses, have given generously over the years to Southern
Health hospitals, with both their time, and expertise.
This has enabled our hospitals - Casey Hospital, Dandenong Hospital, Kingston
Centre, Monash Medical Centre - Clayton and Moorabbin, to purchase much needed medical equipment, undertake
major capital redevelopments, expand their clinical and surgical services and
provide better patient care to many thousands of people.
There are many ways that this support has been realised, including:
- Cash gifts or donations
Donating money towards the purchase of specific items of medical equipment to
clinical areas in need. Donations of $2 or more to Southern Health are tax
deductible.
- Cause-related marketing and special events
Active participation in fundraising and public relations events and
promotions designed to raise funds for a specific purpose such as research
into diseases, building works, equipment purchases etc. This type of support
often includes a cash donation pledge as well as offering your organisation’s expertise in
marketing and promotional initiatives.
- Payroll deductions and gift matching
Some organisations have "adopted" a Southern Health service, by encouraging
their staff to consider regular and small deductions from their pay, which are
then transferred electronically to our banking account. These employee
contributions are tax deductible. Matching their employees’ commitment to
Southern Health, companies will often match (dollar for dollar), the level of
support provided by their staff.
- Gifts in Kind & Pro Bono Services
Businesses that may not be in the position to provide a cash gift, often
demonstrate their support by donating some of their products or services. This
may be the provision of a raffle prize, the provision of food and/or other
consumables which might otherwise be an operational or event management expense
to the Southern Health, or by providing their technical and professional skills
free of charge (ie printing, marketing and legal advice)
- Staff / Community Group Fundraising
Local businesses and community groups sometimes choose to run a
company function or social event (ie. golf day, BBQ, Dinner Dance or Trivia
Night in support of a Southern Health service). Proceeds from such occasions
are then passed onto the Unit or service of their choosing.
If you or your company are interested in discussing ways you might be able to
help Southern Health, please contact our Fundraising Coordinator,
Amanda Georgiou, on
03 9594 7818 or e-mail:
Amanda.Georgiou@southernhealth.org.au
IN- MEMORIAM DONATIONS
Many people find comfort in making a gift in lieu of flowers to Hospitals, in
recognition of the medical care and attention provided to someone who has
recently died.
Each of Southern Health’s hospitals Monash Medical Centre – Clayton & Moorabbin, Dandenong Hospital and the Kingston Centre
and the new Casey Hospital are grateful recipients
of these gifts using them to purchase much needed medical equipment that one day
will help save the lives of others.
Southern Health’s Fundraising Department produces a series of
In-Memoriam donation envelopes which can be given to families and their chosen
funeral director on request.
These envelopes are then distributed at the funeral service to those interested
in supporting the family’s wishes.
Money collected at the funeral is then forwarded to Southern Health by either
the family or the funeral company within days of the service.
Money is also received via the post from those who have collected an envelop at
the funeral service and made a subsequent donation.
To receive a supply of In-Memoriam donation envelopes, please phone Southern
Health Fundraising on 9594 7818 or e-mail us on
fundraising@southernhealth.org.au.
