Teaching Training

Education and professional development for junior doctors is provided via seminar programs, case meetings and a comprehensive library service, including Medline and Internet access.

The Registrar positions are accredited for 12 months clinical and 24 months laboratory training for the FRCPA and JSAC programs.

1. Postgraduate sessions

a. Registrar

Southern Health allows five hours per week for educational activities.  This may incorporate Journal Club, Clinical Review, Bone Marrow Morphology, Radiology held at Monash Medical Centre Clayton, tutorials conducted by JSAC and regular management meetings held with the Senior Scientists.
Registrars are also encouraged to attend relevant haematology meetings within Melbourne, Victoria and Australia.

As part of the Registrars’ clinical training the –

Daily ward rounds are conducted with the Consultant on ward service.
The Clinical Registrar provides day-to-day supervision of the Haematology & Thalassaemia Resident.

Sessions with the Registrar’s Supervisor are arranged on a regular basis to meet clinical and laboratory workloads. Registrars are expected to be enrolled in the Joint Specialist Advisory Committee program in Haematology under the auspices of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia or the FRCPA (Haem) Program.

b. Journal Club

The Clinical Haematology Journal Club is held on Wednesday between 12:45 and 2pm weekly, from the beginning of March to the end of November each year. A light luncheon is provided.

Should you wish to present to the meeting, you only need contact our office to arrange a suitable date.

c. Grand Rounds

All junior medical staff are encouraged to attend weekly hospital based Grand Rounds. Grand Rounds and State-of-Art lectures are held Wednesday at 8am, Lecture Theatre 2, Level 2, Monash Medical Centre Clayton. Breakfast is sometimes provided at 7:45am before the meeting.

2. Undergraduate

1. Year 5 MBBS Clinical Rotation Placement

A six week placement is made available for one (1) student per rotation.  Placements are made available to work in with the Unit’s staffing and workload commitments.

During the placement students are exposed to inpatients, outpatient clinics and journal club presentations as well as laboratory work.

Each student is required to submit a written project at the conclusion of the rotation.
