Blood Transfusion
General information
Some patients are red cell dependant and will generally need a transfusion
every 3-4 weeks of 3-4 units of blood on an indefinite basis.
Some patients get transfused on an as need basis and thus may not have a set
schedule. We will advise these patients when their next transfusion is.
Some patients need “special blood” eg irradiated, leukodepleted, blood
warmers
For red cell dependant patients we transfuse generally if HB<90g/L, if
90-100g/L it is not urgent but should be done as soon as possible.
If Hb<70g/L the transfusion should be within
24-48 hours as a general guideline
Generally the Registrar will not be present during the entire procedure thus
blood transfusion can be done on weekends and IV orders may be prepared on
Friday.
Each unit of blood takes 2-3 hours to give, so most patients are in for 6-10
hours.
No fasting is required.
Patients take all their usual medication.
You will be able to drive home if you wish
Prior to transfusion patients need
Cross match to be taken within 7 days of transfusion date, Day Treatment Centre prefer this to be done in outpatient pathology so the blood
is ready when they arrive. Cross match form can be left at outpatient pathology
with date of transfusion marked on form so blood bank are aware and can have
blood ready.
A pre transfusion FBE (to be done at same time as cross match)
Patients are booked in DTC (allow at least 48 hours notice for blood transfusion
given that patients spend all day in the unit).
Patients should call Bed Bureau 9594 2111 between 3-4pm the day prior to
confirm bed is available for them.
IV orders are sent to DTC on the day of transfusion.
