Birth Suites:  Monash Medical Centre, Clayton

Birth Suites serves both MMC public & Jessie McPherson private Hospital (JMPH) with an annual delivery number of 3000 public births and 900 private births.  Monash Medical Centre (MMC) Clayton’s Birth Suites are one of three tertiary maternity services in Melbourne providing medical and midwifery services not available elsewhere in Southern Health or in  Victoria.  MMC provides a range of maternity services to meet the various needs of the state & of local families. Well women with uncomplicated pregnancies have the option of primary midwifery care by a team of midwives in the Birth Centre or Midwifery Care Unit, or they may wish to access the antenatal clinic system. Specialist services provided are the Young Women’s Clinic, Adapt Clinic (drug & alcohol issues), Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic and Fetal Diagnostic Unit.  Birth Suites at MMC are supported by a world class Maternal Fetal Medicine unit which specialises in monitoring of high risk pregnancies using technologies such as CTG, Ultrasound.
The service area has 10 birth rooms (includes JMPH ) and a 2  bed assessment area, 2 Birth Centre rooms  and 1 room (with large bath) available  for water births.

Maternity Services / Birth Unit:   Dandenong Hospital

Dandenong supports up to 2700 births per year with many culturally and linguistically diverse families accessing our service. Specific Nationalities include, Somalia, Vietnamese, Cambodia, and Albanian.

The Hospital has a level 2 Special care nursery of 14 cots.

There are many models of care available to women choosing to birth at Dandenong, including a primary care team.

Maternity services also incorporates a lactation day stay program which operates three days a fortnight and is staffed by internationally recognised lactation consultants.

Ancillary services such as social work and interpreting are also available.

Maternity services offers a comprehensive orientation package, supernumerary days that recognise prior experience and skill levels. Professional development is encouraged for all staff through a dedicated midwifery educator and a clinical coach. Beginning practitioners are given supported time to assist development and confidence in all areas of midwifery. We have twice weekly in-service education sessions.

Ward G – Maternity and Special Care Nursery:   Casey Hospital

Ward G- Maternity and Special Care Nursery is a 23 bed integrated Maternity Unit with 6 beds for Special Care Nursery.  The Unit is a low risk Maternity unit that functions within a collaborative model with Obstetricians, General Practitioners, Paediatricians and Anaesthetists.  The unit has a focus on low risk and has strict inclusion/exclusion criteria both at booking and throughout the spectrum of pregnancy, labour and birth.  The focus is to provide family centred care that supports midwifery, low risk care.  We are able to provide for instrumental births and emergency caesareans if required as well as epidural facilities. Women and their partners/families are empowered to participate and provide support and care throughout the spectrum of pregnancy, childbirth and as parents.

The outlay of the unit is integrated to provide midwifery care in all facets of Maternity that supports team work and enables midwives/neonatal nurses to function within their scope of practice.  The unit has a resource and education room available for meetings and staff education.
