Peritoneal Dialysis Unit : Monash Medical Centre, Clayton
The Southern Health Peritoneal Dialysis Unit is the largest in Victoria and growing at the rate of 5-8% per year. Our aim is to educate people being treated for renal failure to achieve as independent a lifestyle as possible using both CAPD and APD as peritoneal dialysis options. The Unit uses both Baxter and Fresenius Systems to suit the individual patient. Our participation in the patient's treatment commences with pre-dialysis education and continues through the training period and carries into the ongoing support role after dialysis training is complete.
Haemodialysis: Monash Medical Centre, Moorabbin
This unit deals with a client base of Renal Failure patients and their
families. We generally treat Outpatients and Day Case admissions. The
unit has a 3 Chair training room and 1 treatment room. We have a Nurse
/ Patient Ratio of 4 EFT and currently cater for 140 home patients,
with 1 EFT allocated to inpatient care. The staff comprises of
a Nurse Uni Manager (NUM), 2 CNC and 2 RN G2. Most have completed
postgraduate renal nursing education. Between them the current crew
have more than 30 years of dialysis experience. There is a Renal Support
Nurse attached to Renal Unit.
Satellite Haemodialysis Unit: Cranbourne Integrated Care Centre (CICC)
Cranbourne Haemodialysis Unit is a 12 chair satellite dialysis unit under the auspices of Southern Health. Open since August 1999, we currently provide chronic haemodialysis to 57 patients 3 times per week. It is well placed within the Cranbourne Integrated Care Centre @ Cranbourne. The care centre is unique in that it offers a wide range of services within the centre from twin day surgery, community health, dental are just a couple of services that are available to the community and also to our dialysis patients.
Haemodialysis Unit: Casey Hospital
Casey Haemodialysis Unit is a satellite unit within Casey Hospital and is open 6 days a week Monday to Saturday. With 9 stations, it provides maintenance haemodialysis treatment for 36 patients living within the local community. Patients visit the unit 3 times a week for treatment and are assessed weekly by medical staff. Patients are encouraged to assist in their care if able and families and carers are encouraged to visit the unit and provide support for their family and friends whenever possible. The unit provides many opportunities for nurses interested in nephrology and renal medicine.
